PLANT PERFECTION - It's normal to want our plants to look good, as long as we don't exagerate by setting unrealistic expectations. And often times the expectations we set are very unrealistic. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ We want our plants to look the way they look in nurseries. It's unrealistic and a source of stress. We don't have the environment they have, we don't use the chemicals they use.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Professional growers use PGRs (Plant Growth Regulators) for rooting, to increase root mass production. Bigger roots = healthier plants. They also use PGRs to control stem elongation, to have plants have a shorter, nicer, more compacted look. They use PGRs to stimulate flowering and control how the flowers will look like and to create a more visually appealing plant. Something we can't really achieve at home.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ When it comes to home environments and home plant care, most of us live in houses/apartments, not nurseries where we can maintain that highly controlled environment. We also have jobs, so we will miss a watering now and then. When the days are cloudy, we won't remember to turn on the grow light to supplement natural light. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ For professional growers, this is all they do. And often times they will have sensors and computers to automatically control the environment.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ As long as the plants are healthy, occasional brown tips or edges are normal. In most cases leaves are transient. Plants will lose older leaves, new ones will grow. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ So give yourself a break :) You are doing a great job!⠀ ⠀⠀ I saw how professional growers operate last year, when I attended Cultivate '21. Cultivate is a huge annual plant trade show in Columbus, Ohio, organized by @youramericanhort. 500 exhibitors, 200 lectures and you can learn a lot (not a sponsored post btw). If you have a chance, I recommend you visit this year.⠀⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mrhouseplant #greenthumb #iloveplants #indoorgarden #indoorjungle #indoorplants #instaplant #livingwithplants #loveplants #peoplewithplants #plantcare #plantcollection #planthoarder #plantlife #plantlove #plantobsession #plantporn #plants #plantsarefriends #plantsathome #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #springintoplants #theplantedgram #house_plant_com

How to make a rubber plant bushy - This method is called notching. You can do it on many plants - scheffleras, rubber trees, fiddle leaf figs, etc. You can do it on most woody plants. Make a cut above a node, like I demonstrated in the video. ⠀ ⠀ A growth regulator auxin is what forces lower buds on a stem to remain dormant. Auxin flows from actively growing shoots downward in a plant. It only flows downwards. ⠀ ⠀ Imagine a shallow stream of water. If you put a large rock in the middle of the stream, the water will start flowing around the rock. The notch we're making is the rock. The stream is the stream of auxin. The same way water would flow around the rock, auxin will flow around a dormant bud. Which makes it possible for the bud to start growing. Pretty cool, isn't it? ????⠀ ⠀ The reason why a lot of notching attempts fail: ⠀ ⠀ 1️⃣ A lot of people only make a small cut in the tree, they don't actually remove a section of the bark and cambium. That might or might not work. If the cut is wide enough and deep enough and you put something in it, like a piece of plastic, to prevent it from reconnecting the tissues, it can work.⠀ ⠀ 2️⃣ The cut isn't deep or wide enough. The cut has to be wider than the node itself, otherwise auxin will continue affecting the bud. Try to go for 1/8-1/4" wider than the petiole. The cut also has to be deep enough. You need to remove the bark and the vascular cambium layer beneath it. Take a look at the video to see how deep you need to go. If you aren't succesful in removing everything, use a knife to scrape of the remaining tissue until you reach the sapwood.⠀ ⠀ 3️⃣ lack of patience - it can take a long time for new shoots to start growing - even 6 or more months. Rubber trees aren't particularly fast growers.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mrhouseplant #rubbertree #ficuselastica #greenthumb #houseplantsofinstagram #iloveplants #indoorgarden #indoorjungle #indoorplants #instaplant #livingwithplants #loveplants #peoplewithplants #plantcare #plantcollection #planthoarder #plantlife #plantlove #plantobsession #plantporn #plants #plantsarefriends #plantsathome #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #springintoplants #theplantedgram

Today I became a citizen of the United States! Wow, what a day! ???????????? It was so beautiful seeing 22 people at the ceremony from 19 different countries getting their citizenship today. After living in the US for 5 years, I got the right to apply for naturalization. The process was surprisingly fast. I applied in Nov 2022, had my interview and civics test in April and only 2 weeks later I was already scheduled for my citizenship ceremony ???? Now I have the right to vote. And I have the freedom of being able to travel in and out of the US without limitations. But I'm happy that I am also able to keep my Serbian citizenship, so I can get the best of both worlds ???????????????? . . . . . #mrhouseplant #greenliving #house_plant_community #houseplantclub #houseplants #ihavethisthingwithplants #interiorrewilding #pausewithplants #peoplewithplants #plantdad #plantdaddy #plantgang #plantgeek #plantgoals #plantlife #plantparenthood #plants #plantsathome #plantslovers #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantstagram #therealhouseplantsofinstagram #urbanjungle #urbanjunglebloggers

HOW TO SAVE A BROKEN STEM ON A HOUSEPLANT - A stem on my Leaf of Life plant broke some time ago. Instead of throwing it away, or trying to propagate it, I decided to try and save it by reconnecting the broken piece to its original stem. The plant healed well and I recreated the situation, so you can see what I did to help it⠀ ⠀ ➡️ I broke the stem, partially⠀⠀ ➡️ I pushed the two stem parts together, pressed them tightly and sealed with electrical tape ☺️ It will probably be better if you have grafting tape⠀ ➡️ Like with grafting, the crucial thing is that there is a tight fit. Perhaps you've seen some cactus grafting videos where people use rubber bands to keep a tight fit of the tissues.⠀⠀ ➡️ After 2 weeks, the tissues have healed together and I could remove the tape and the support stick⠀⠀ ➡️ Note that once a stem is broken the vascular system that transports water and nutrients through that stem is cut off. This means the stem would normaly die. You have to catch this quickly, before the stems callus, and you might be lucky and save the stem.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mrhouseplant #greenliving #house_plant_community #houseplantclub #houseplants #ihavethisthingwithplants #interiorrewilding #pausewithplants #peoplewithplants #plantdad #plantdaddy #plantgang #plantgeek #plantgoals #plantlife #plantparenthood #plants #plantsathome #plantslovers #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantstagram #therealhouseplantsofinstagram #urbanjungle #urbanjunglebloggers

GROW A DOZEN ALOCASIAS FROM ONE (WITHOUT CUTTING THE STEM) - If you have an relatively big alocasia, you can grow a ton of new alocasias by using these cormlets, without having to cut the stem, which I know a lot of people dread. ⠀ ⠀ You might see them above soil, attached to the main stem, or under soil. Some will start growing new stems, others won't. After repotting you might find many of them in the soil.⠀ ⠀ When potting the cormlets:⠀ ➡️The flat side is the one that will grow a new shoot, so it's a good practice to keep that side up when potting. But ⠀ even if you don't, the shoot will find it's way up anyway.⠀ ➡️Keep the soil moist, don't let it dry out fully. They need to be moist to start to grow⠀ ➡️Cover the pot to keep humidity high⠀ ➡️Keep the soil warm. A heat mat will increase the temperature by 5-10 degrees and speed up the process⠀ ➡️It takes several weeks for the plants to sprout. Once they do, the amount of light becomes important as it will provide new energy for the plant. It has used a lot of energy from the cormlet to grow that first leaf. Give it bright light, to replenish it. Make sure it's getting at least 1,500 lux of light (over 150 FC), but aim for over 3,000 lux. The more the better, if you can give them over 10,000 USD, they will do amazing! Avoid direct sun.⠀ ⠀ If you're interested in other alocasia propagation methods, check out these posts:⠀ 1) Stem cutting propagation (July 21, 2021)⠀ 2) Air layering propagation (July 17, 2021)⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mrhouseplant #alocasia #alocasiafrydek #propagation #apartmenttherapy #greenthumbs #houseplant #plantaddict #plantaddiction #plantlover #plantsofinstagram #tropicalparadise #tropicalplants #plantnerd #houseplantdiary #planthouse #plantstyle #plantcetera #ihavethisthingwithplants #interiorrewilding #pausewithplants #peoplewithplants #plantdad #plantdaddy #plantgang #plantgeek #plantgoals

It was really cool watching how the leaf sheath first comes out and then the leaf ???? Do you remember my large Alocasia Frydek? It was about 3 years old, with multiple almost 3 feet tall stems, and several ofshoots. It was getting too tall, so I decided to sell it. But I propagated a stem cutting and that's the plant in this video ???? ⠀ ⠀ You can see the propagation process in my earlier videos.⠀ ⠀ Guess how long was the timelapse - how long for the sheath to come out and how long for the leaf?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mrhouseplant #alocasia #alocasiafrydek #greenliving #house_plant_community #houseplantclub #houseplants #ihavethisthingwithplants #interiorrewilding #pausewithplants #peoplewithplants #plantdad #plantdaddy #plantgang #plantgeek #plantgoals #plantlife #plantparenthood #plants #plantsathome #plantslovers #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantstagram #therealhouseplantsofinstagram #urbanjungle #urbanjunglebloggers

PROPAGATION TIPS - Regardless of whether you propagate in water or soil, you can use these tips to drastically reduce the rooting time and increase chances that your cuttings will survive.⠀⠀ ⠀ ➡️ Light - The more light you can provide, the faster a cutting will photosynthesize and the faster it will produce roots. We know that light intensity drops significantly with each foot away from a window, so keep cuttings right in front of windows. Yes, you can propagate a plant in a dark corner but it will take a long time and it's more likely to fail.⠀ ⠀ Bright light is over 3,000 lux but the more you provide the faster they will root and grow.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ If you don't have a lot of light, get a grow light. For info on how long to keep them on and how close to a plant, you can use my Grow Light Finder, it's free. ⠀ ⠀ ➡️ Oxygen - roots use oxygen and release carbon dioxide. When you provide more oxygen, you can drastically reduce the propagation time, cuttings will root much faster and you won't need to replace water as frequently. That's because an air pump will provide a constant inflow of oxygen that the roots can use.⠀ ⠀ ➡️ Warmth - both rooting media temperature (water or soil) and room temperature are important. Keep cuttings in a warm room. When the temperature is too low, the level of photosynthesis goes dow, which slows down the speed of root production and reduces chances of success. Optimal water or soil temperature should be between 75F and 80F (24C-26C) for a lot of tropical species.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ To increase temperature you can place a heat mat under propagation vessels. A heat mat can increase the soil/water temperature by 5-10 degrees. It will do this with both soil and water propagations.⠀ ⠀ Good luck propagating ????⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ .⠀⠀ #mrhouseplant #pilea #pileapeperomioides #propagation #waterpropagation #greenliving #house_plant_community #houseplantclub #interiorrewilding #pausewithplants #peoplewithplants #plantdad #plantdaddy #plantgang #plantgeek #plantgoals #plantlife #plantparenthood #plants #plantsathome #plantslovers #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantstagram #therealhouseplantsofinstagram #urbanjungle #urbanjunglebloggers

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! - 2021 has been challenging for everyone in so many ways. With the pandemic taking lives, health, but also causing a lot of stress, emotional and physical problems from quarantining for prolonged periods of time, here's to 2022 hopefully being better! ????⠀ ⠀ My plan is to dedicate more time to self-care - both emotional and physical self-care. And to try and be happy. I'm already starting to exercise more. I've been spending a lot of time in front of the computer in 2021 and not enough time with the people I love. So this year I aim to spend more time with my family and friends. And of course I will still find time to produce good content.⠀ ⠀ What are your plans for 2022? ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #mrhouseplant #pineapple #greenliving #house_plant_community #houseplantclub #houseplants #ihavethisthingwithplants #interiorrewilding #pausewithplants #peoplewithplants #plantdad #plantdaddy #plantgang #plantgeek #plantgoals #plantlife #plantparenthood #plants #plantsathome #plantslovers #plantsmakemehappy #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantstagram #therealhouseplantsofinstagram #urbanjungle #urbanjunglebloggers
