Try these drills to work on your middle splits. Straddle, called Samakonasana in Ashtanga, is one of the hardest flexibility based movements for me. This has not come easily and I still have a lot of work to do. What about you? 1. Use a chair to keep the leg elevated and then drop the chest down. Then sink the hips down and use a side stretch to work the inner thighs. 2. Build the strength by lifting the leg out to the side repeatedly. After a few repetitions, slide down and experience the flexibility. 3. Flex and extend the spine to mobilize strength and flexibility. Placed the hands on blocks and slide down to keep the chest elevated. This slight elevation allows gravity to help release the inner thighs. 4. From straddle itself, roll forward and backward to use activation and release to increase the range of motion. After a few rounds, settle and breathe in the asana. Try this creative drill to build up the strength and flexibility to improve Kapotasana. Stacking the blocks requires the legs and back to support the full range of motion with articulation and strength. Once you develop the control to bear the additional weight of the cork block, you will be able to keep the hips lifted more as you walk the hands in towards the feet. Remember that Kapotasana takes time. Be patient with yourself and don’t rush or force. ???? Primary Series is not the beginning because it is easy. It is the beginning because it is foundational. Before a practitioner can hold greater currents of prāṇa, before subtle perception stabilizes, before meditation deepens, something in the organism must be reorganized. Primary Series is that reorganization. The traditional name Yoga Cikitsā reveals the intention encoded within the sequence itself. Cikitsā is usually translated as “therapy,” “treatment,” or “healing.” Its root is often traced to cit — consciousness, awareness, perception — combined with an intensifying and active formation implying attentive care, wise correction, and conscious restoration. Cikitsā is not passive healing. Primary Series does not merely stretch muscles. It treats misalignment in structure, breath, nervous system, and even patterns of perception. Yoga does not end when the āsana practice is over. In many ways, it is just beginning. We cultivate strength so that we may hold peace as a living prayer, even, and especially, in times of chaos and uncertainty. The practice traditionally closes with the ritual chanting of Om Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ Śāntiḥ, repeated three times in reference to the tāpa-traya, the three kinds of suffering. The first invocation is for peace within, a quieting of inner turbulence, a settling of the mind and heart. The second is for peace in the external world, a sincere wish for harmony among all beings, a hope that understanding may prevail over conflict. The third is for peace in the unseen, cosmic realm, where the subtle currents of life move beyond personal control. Ending the practice with this chant reminds us that peace begins within, radiates outward, and ultimately rests in the vastness that holds us all.
