Breath and dust hang together in the near frozen air, morning a muted affair as we ease into the truck. The dogs pile themselves onto laps. Watch through frosted windows. The deep red glow creeps down the Sangres. There is hot coffee, thick and black in the kitchen. Duke and Tate dust the snow off a pile of wood, a fire crackles in the coral. The bison wait patiently, standing shoulder to shoulder. The clanking of horns against rusted steel marking their movement into the chutes, a brief encounter with us, and they are gone, glad of it. Soon the sun again, open pasture, another year.

Touchstone III / Getting by with a lot more than a little help from my friends - with ages ranging from 8 weeks to 8 decades. Had a lot of fun capturing moments on film during the early days of the build - simple and honest the medium fit the process in a way that was grounding and connective instead of distracting or ulteriorly motivated. this roll in particular was memorable - a gift of expired fujifilm from my buddy @ben_moon’s freezer that ended up being etched with the reflected light of some of my favorite humans #homeisnotplacesitislove #thebackofbeyond #35mm #leicam6

thunder rolls like giant trains, an old dry laugh across the plains; fleeting forms and golden flames. an unnamed peak. a single sigh. a passing of the by and by. now shadows named alone by light, sing their songs once more by night; as you and me and the old grey owl, sit and wonder why and how; between the was and is and might, the here and now come squeeze in tight, to gossip of the coyotes tail, the flustered flurry of the quail. Oh ho! you want a story old, round fires bold, tonight is told. this too passes, this too stays. yet absent darkness there are no rays. salute the dawn and cheer the dusk, the gift of time, lived heart to husk.

I try to create and cultivate situations and scenarios where “hurry” is the furthest thing from anyone’s mind. As humans we’re very perceptive to other people’s energy, and that sense of “hurry” or “busyness” comes through in imagery I think. I used to be a lot more frantic about “getting the shot”. Now days I see a lot of shots, and know I can’t get them all, and that chasing each shot often makes it so you don’t get any of them. I think patience is an underrated skill, and like any skill, it takes practice.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ // From a conversation with @heidivolpe for @aphotoedotor interview a few weeks back around dealing with the constant pressure of creating images. Thanks for the thoughtful And thought provoking questions Heidi //

Garrett, Eugénie, Laura. Skagit summer. August 2019 ⁣ ⁣ • ⁣ ⁣ I’ve been shooting film for twenty five years now I guess. but it’s been about a decade since I dusted off the old 4x5 and slowed down enough to slip under the dark cloth. to try to see something. Mostly I didn’t think about it, but sometimes I did and when I did, deep down I feared I might have forgotten, or worse, never knew how to see in that old way, how to reflect, and on good days absorb, the subtle rhythms and stories of an upside down world. a world that demands little, promises nothing, occasionally rewarding patience and precision. Anyway, I made these frames a few weeks ago. They are of people who I respect and enjoy, a friend with a chainsaw (which is the kind of friend I like to hang out with in my spare time), a lovely lady, and a sunset that was pretty. They are simple frames. But I guess you saw that. Other things you didn’t see: I took twenty minutes to make a photo of a cat. I fumbled with dark slides and sweated over loading sheet film, messed up stuff. I’m not saying this is a good way to spend your time. In the end, the bits of light that worked their way through the bellows and across the emulsion of those single solitary frames mattered for no one much, except me. And in that realization, in those few moments, I was reminded of why I fell in love with this stuff ⁣ ⁣ •⁣ ⁣ Excited to be heading out this week into the Colorado high country on my first fully analog personal project in quite some time. Appreciate all the friends (starting with my father - and right up to present day ) who have encouraged, taught, and further instigated this mad love affair over the years #graflex #speedgraphic #4x5 #kodak @kodak @kodak_shootfilm

Child of Mine, come⁣⁣ as you grow in youth⁣⁣ you will learn⁣⁣ the secret places⁣⁣ the cave behind the waterfall⁣⁣ the arms of the oak⁣⁣ that hold you high⁣⁣ the stars so near⁣⁣ on a desert ledge⁣⁣ ...the important places.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And, as with age, you choose⁣⁣ your own way⁣⁣ among the many faces⁣⁣ of a busy world⁣⁣ may you always remember⁣⁣ the path that leads back.⁣⁣ ...back to the important places.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Dad to Forest, 1986⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ •⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ These words, simple as they are, have echoed through my life, continuing to shape my connection to family and place in ways I could never have guessed.
